Resources
Upwork
If you have little to no experience but you’re ready to start freelancing, Upwork is your best bet. You don’t need a degree to work there and it’s free to sign up. Also, it’s beginner-friendly and you can set your own prices for work. Learn how to get started on Upwork.
Fiverr
This platform is very similar to Upwork, but uses a different system. Fiverr is also free to join and pays in dollars. You can also hire resume writers on Fiverr for as low as $20 or even less.
This is basically social media for professionals. You can use LinkedIn to find full-time freelance jobs and build connections with other freelancers. It’s where I got my first dollar-paying job.
Indeed
You’ll find thousands of high-paying international jobs on Indeed. It’s also great for saving your work history and for automatic applications on other job platforms
Canva
This is an underrated site for job seekers. Canva is a graphic design tool that offers various templates. You can create resumes and portfolios using Canva’s ready-to-edit templates. It’s free to use, but there is a paid version that costs 2,800 naira monthly. I recommend the paid version for better templates, but the free version is okay. There’s also a free one month trial for the paid version.
Google Docs
If you have a laptop, you can design a clean professional resume for free using Google Docs. It’s what I used to create my most recent resume. There are ready-to-edit resume templates that you can access on your phone, but if you have a laptop, it’s so much better to create your resume from scratch.
WordPress.com
This is a great free site for building an online portfolio. Just go to Play Store and download the wordpress.com app. There are paid options, but you can create a personal site for free and upload your work samples there.
Udemy
When you’re just starting, you need to take courses to learn how to master your niche. Udemy is a great place to get courses from experts in every field at cheap prices, and you get a certificate. From graphic design to content writing and web development, you’ll find courses for every niche here.
Coursera
Another great platform for courses in different freelance niches. And as a bonus, you can get lessons for school too. Lecturers at top universities like Stanford and Yale teach in-depth lessons on different academic courses on Coursera.
ChatGPT
Don’t be afraid of AI. ChatGPT is your best friend when you don’t know what to do. If you need help writing a cover letter or creating a resume, or you want tips for doing well on an interview, you can go straight to ChatGPT. There are many great prompts for creating resumes with AI.
Grammarly
I can not stress this enough. Your resume MUST be error-free. No spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. Grammarly will help you catch any errors you miss. There’s also a paid version that can help you rephrase your words for neater, more professional texts.
